Garment Dyeing with Sulphur dyes

Sulphur Dyes On Garments:

Sulphur dyes have found a wide acceptance among garment dyers more recently because of their inherent poor fastness to chlorine. Nowadays the acid-wash or ball-wash has become very popular, where in the garments are dyed with sulphur dyes and subsequently treated with thermocol balls previously soaked in Hypo or Pot.permanganate solution.

The final effect achieved is a great wash down look which cannot be achived with other classes of dyes. Further thsi concept of dyeing is not restricted only to denims or wovens but is also used for knitted garments.

The typical dyeing of garment with Sulphur dyes is as follows:

Dissolution of dyestuff:

Method A ( Outside the drum machine)

Prepare as follows:

  1. Sulfast dye : as per percentage shade o.w.f.
  2. Sodium Sulphide: as per shade card
  3. Soda Ash: 1/2 quantity of dyestuff
  4. Sulfaxil LTSN: 250~300 grams ( Sequesterant)
  5. Sulfonol WRW: 25 grams (anionic wetting agent)

Dissolve items 2-5 in boling water. Use this water to dissolve the dyestuff. Keep it to stand for 5-10 minutes. Fiter before adding in to tne machine.

Method B (Inside the drum machine):

This method is adopted when dyeing dark shades where the quantity of dyestuff is large. The entire items 1-5 are added in the drum machine containing around 150 liters of water. It is then thoroughly boiled for 10 to 15 minutes and the machine is kept running to ensure thorough dissolution. Then the liquor is made up t 300 liters with cold water. This will also bring down the temperature to 50to 60°C.

Dyeing:

Prepare the dye bath as follows:

  • Sulfonol WRW: 0.25 gram/liter
  • Soda Ash: 2.5 grams/liter
  • Sodium Sulphide: 5.0 grams/liter
  • Sulfaxil LTSN: 0.5 gram/liter

Enter garments and run for 5 minutes at 30 to 40°C. Add dissolved dye gradually( in parts). Raise tempearute to 60°C.

Add 20 to 30 grams/liter Vauum salt and gradually raise temperature to 90°C. Continue dyeing for 40 to 60 minutes.

Give overflow rinsing for 10 to 15 minutes.

Oxidation:

Carry out oxidation in a fresh bath containing

  • Sulfaxil ECOX: 2 grams/liter ( eco friendly oxidizing agenty)
  • Acetic Acid : 2 grams/liter

at 50°C for 20 minutes, Drain and rinse cold for 5 to 10 minutes.

Soaping:

Soap at 70°C using

  • Soap = 1 gram/liter
  • Soda ash = 1 gram/liter

for 15 to 20 minutes,

Finally give one hot and cold wash.
