Those consumer goods
containing azo dyes that, by reductive cleavage of one or more azo groups, may
release one or more of the aromatic amines listed in the Table are forbidden.
The detectable concentrations of any amine should not exceed 30 ppm in the finished
articles or in the dyed parts thereof.
The list has been
up-dated since 1994 and now includes 22 aromatic amines. It should be noted
that two of these amines are analyzed by breaking down to form other amines on
the list. Further one of the most recent amines added to the list is
4-aminoazobenzene, which in itself contains an azo group. Currently no
analytical procedure exists for this amine since it breaks down to form amines
that are not listed. As with many of the amines in the list, no commercially
available leather dyes are known to be based on the amine, 4-aminoazobenzene.

Recommended NormsWhen tested for amines on textiles, O-Amino zaotoluene and 2 Amino 4 Nitrotoluense are detected
as O-toluene and 2,4 diamino toluene respectively. Nearly 2000 azo dyes are currently
marketed and form major group due to their relative low cost. Some of
these are prohibited from use as they form on reduction (cehmical or microbiological) aryl amines which
are carcinogenic. The banned dyes belong mainly to Acid, basic, Direct and Disperse class of dyes.
Legally permissible limits of the banned amined on textiles is
30 mg/lg or 30 ppm. Though not regulatory or legal, the corresponding
limit of the banned amine in the dyestuff is 150 mg/kg or 150 ppm. |
